WORKING IN THE SEWER

In the 1950’s there was a television program called ‘The Honeymooners’ featuring Jackie Gleason. He played the part of a bus driver Ralph Kramden. His neighbor and best friend Ed Norton was played by Art Carney. Norton worked in the sewers of New York and, even as a kid, I felt sorry for that being his work environment with the vermin and filth I imagined existed down there.

As I grew older I remember parents having a sense of pride when talking about their son ‘the lawyer’. They saw it as an elevated position in the social hierarchy.

As an older person I now realize that we should have the same sympathy I had as a kid for a person who worked in the sewers for attorneys working in the legal system. The filth and vermin are in my opinion part of the environment in the legal system and a significant amount of our politicians come from there.
