These groups – and frequently including ‘signing’ in the most distracting location possible – do get to show diversity and uniforms but most don’t speak – or if they did, would have no revelations. Most of the attendees do not show emotion, whether it be sadness or enthusiasm for a socially beneficial project – they are just there. They get screen time and the public can see dad, grandpa or the neighbor in uniform – and they must be important or they wouldn’t be up there on stage with the mayor or the police chief with 4 stars on the lapel, even if they are not asked to make a verbal contribution to the presentation. Perhaps the producers could also provide captions for the hearing impaired rather than having the distraction of a person waving their arms and making strange facial expressions.
